The Professional Development Program is the cornerstone of the riding intruction and training program at Windfall Equestrian Center. Tailored to riders in dressage, hunt seat, and western disciplines, this program consists of 8 levels, each more challenging than the last. Click here to purchase one of our course catalogs for a deep dive into our courses within our professional development program and lesson program, both in-person and online.

PDP CURRICULUM

To get started, riders first select a discipline and can choose dressage, hunt seat, or western. Riders may change discipline at any time and can choose to learn multiple disciplines at the same time.

Every new PDP member starts at the lowest level and works their way through the program. Riders who are new to the program and are already far along in their journey may know some of the material already. The purpose of taking every rider through the program ensure that every rider in our program has a rock-solid foundation for advanced riding.

Each level consists of skills to learn in the saddle that correspond directly to the educational material found on the PDP e-learning platform. E-learning materials include videos, diagrams, live webinars, and more. Also included in the levels are projects and experiences that help to build understanding of the material and prepare would-be professionals for a future in the equestrian world. You may be asked to complete assignments such as scribing at a dressage show, shadowing a veterinarian, designing a jump course, or interviewing a famous equestrian that you admire.

THE ADVANTAGES OF ADVANCEMENT

As riders advance through the levels, new opportunities become unlocked. These opportunities include mentorship programs, internships, and even employment as a Windfall Equestrian Center instructor. Riders that go through the levels with high scores and showing consisten progress are also top candidates for scholarships.

  • Volunterering - Level 1 graduates and above
  • Horse Showing - Level 2 graduates and above
  • Leasing - Level 3 graduates and above
  • Mentorship - Level 4 graduates and above
  • Apprenticeship - Level 5 graduates and above

MOVING TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Riders may advance faster in their in-person mounted lessons than on the PDP e-learning platform, and vice-versa, but a rider cannot officially be considered a level graduate until both the riding and e-learning requirements of the level are met. Levels testing includes a final exam as well as a riding skills assessment by one of our qualified instructors, or one of our PDP mentors or apprentice instructors, depending on which level is being assessed. In-person exams can be scheduled as a regular 1-hour private lesson.

RIDING SKILLS AND E-LEARNING CONTENT BY LEVEL

This level is designed to give the most inexperienced beginner a safe start in horsemanship.  Focusing on the most fundamental aspects, riders will get a solid foundation that ensures a safe, fun, and fulfilling experience that they can carry with them into all of their future goals. All of the skills learned in level 1 are on a longe line, where the instructor maintains control over the horse. Riding on the longe line gives the rider freedom to learn how to balance without needing to focus on managing the horse.
